Vista and User Account Control - It Solves most Vista Issues

I walked into a law firm last week to install Amicus Attorney on a new Vista Machine.  As I entered the attorney's office, I noticed that he was on the phone with Microsoft Tech Support.  He told me that he installed Adobe Professional 8 earlier that morning on his machine and when he tried to register it, Vista gave a fit and it crashed Adobe.  He was on the phone with Adobe Tech Support for an hour and a half before they transferred him to Microsoft Tech Support which he had wasted another hour.

As we were waiting for tech support the attorney asked if I knew how to fix the problem.  My response was, shut off User Account Control in Vista, register Adobe and turn it back on.  He tried this and it worked.  It took about 5 minutes.  I am shocked that neither Adobe or Microsoft thought of this solution as in my experience it is the first thing to try when you have a vista issue.  Warning, when you shut off User Account Control you must restart your workstation. I have posted directions on how to do this below.

Start --> Control Panel --> User Accounts --> Turn User Account Control on or off

Amicus 7, HotDocs 6.2 and Check line 59

I recently put in Amicus 7 at a firm in Jackson, MS that had been using Amicus 5.5.   After the install I went to test out their HotDocs documents which started causing all sorts of problems.  I Called Amicus TechSupport and found that there was a patch for Amicus that solved some HotDocs 6.2 issues.  After installing the patch I started getting the error message below:

perfectscript

Working with Jeff (who was great, I am saving his email and extension for future use) from Amicus TechSupport, we discovered that although the firm was using HotDocs 6.2, some of their documents had been coded in a previous version.  This did not cause a problem with Amicus 5, but does with Amicus 7.  We added all the HotDocs Documents from Amicus into a template library and converted them all to work with HotDocs 6.2.  This solved the problem.

Amicus 7, Outlook and Crashing

I had a client that was having major problems with Amicus crashing when he was in Outlook.  I checked out his preferences for the Outlook link and saw that his Amicus was set to Exchange with Outlook every 1 minute.  I changed it to 15 minutes and he has not had a crash since.

TomTom

I finally got GPS back into my life.  I had been using TomTom Navigator 5 with my Treo 650 and 680.  When I made the switch to the Treo 750 this software would no longer work.  I had to purchase Navigator 6 which  I was not sure was going to work because it was not listed as a supported device.  Here are several things I love about having GPS on my phone.

  • It is extremely portable so when I need to travel and rent a car, I can  bring it with me.
  • It tells me the exact time that I will arrive at an appointment.
  • It gives me traffic reports and alternative routes.
  • I can install and use it on my laptop.
